Louis Agassiz School, built in 1929, is a high-performing Pre K-8 school located in the West Park neighborhood of Cleveland. Louis Agassiz earned an “A” ratings in value-added on the Ohio report card, meaning that our scholars earned more than one year’s worth of academic growth in one school year. Our Louis Agassiz family of excellent educators, students, parents and community partners are dedicated to the outstanding success of our scholars. Our culture, curriculum and unique programs promote academic achievement, personal responsibility, creativity and leadership.
Louis Agassiz offers a standards-based academic program in language arts, mathematics, reading, writing, social studies and science, as well as an integrated curriculum supported by art, music, media science and physical education. Our special education staff collaborates on a continuous basis to ensure that students’ individual needs are addressed and that each student is served appropriately. Our early learners, elementary students and middle school students participate in differentiated, creative and challenging curriculum and activities.
In the last ten years, Louis Agassiz has had numerous 6th graders who have received a scholarship to Ohio State University’s Young Scholars Program. This is a rigorous process and we currently have 12 students in this program. We provide an after-school tutoring program that helps students in need of extra academic support. Our WAVE (Winning Against Violent Environments) program is a conflict mediation program in which peers provide positive solutions for minor conflicts. We have had this program for ten years and it is very successful
Partnerships include Fairview Hospital, which provides us with health and nutrition classes, counseling services, school supplies, group counseling and grief counseling for loss of family members. Applewood is another invaluable partner to our school, with a counselor assigned every day to our building. We have many activities for our students and families including intramurals, choir, private instrument lessons after school, peer tutoring, Boy Scouts, peer mediation and arts.
All CMSD schools provide a full continuum of services for students with mild to moderate learning and behavioral issues. Depending on the child’s needs, he or she may receive instruction in the regular education classroom with accommodations and supports, or in a small-group resource room setting for some subjects, or in a single classroom environment for all core subjects. All CMSD schools have access to speech/language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, audiology, and orientation/mobility services. For children with multiple or low-incidence disabilities, severe cognitive delays, or significant emotional/behavioral concerns, CMSD offers specialized classes within schools in every region of the city.
The District provides yellow bus service grades K-5 for all students who live at least a mile from their “assigned school.” In grades 6 through 12, CMSD will pay the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority to transport students who live at least a half-mile from their “assigned school.” If a student chooses to attend another school that isn’t their “assigned school” or a designated “specialty” school, then the District may not be able to provide transportation services. For information about transportation options, call 216.634.7020. Additional services available from Pre-K to 12 based on a student’s special needs and Individual Education Plan. Contact the student’s IEP case manager at the school for details.
